A consulting firm can try to be all things to all people, and have specialist employees with expertise in very narrow scopes. This is a very expensive way to run a business and also why the large consulting firms (You know who they are!) charge so much.

Alternatively, you can build a trusted team of colleagues whose work you respect, and work with them to augment your own expertise. When my organization requires additional manpower or expertise, I go to them.
